The Origin of the Community Band Outdoor Picnic – “CBOP”
I have always enjoyed playing in bands, whether they were jazz bands or concert bands. I enjoy the challenge of learning new pieces and hearing them come together for performances. Most importantly I enjoy performing for people and seeing how much they get out of hearing live music. When Covid happened and the Heartland Concert Band was not getting together for practice or performances, I thought that we needed to set our sights on coming back stronger than ever and helping people experience the joy of live music again. I remember growing up in my small hometown in central Iowa, and it had a one-day summer music festival for community bands in the park under a large pavilion.
When the Cornell Complex in Joplin was built and I saw the outdoor stage with the large grass area, I felt that was the ideal venue for a concert band festival, not just for the Heartland Concert Band, but other community bands from around the area. Why not invite other community bands to come play in front of a large audience, receive a nice donation for their efforts, and get an opportunity to meet and hear other community bands? And then, why not make it a family-friendly, old-time, fun picnic experience with more than just the community bands? So, we are going to start CBOP-24 with food trucks, corporate sponsor booths, kids’ events booths, some antique cars or trucks and a bluegrass band to play during the times between the concert bands. And we’ll see what happens from there.
